I have posted about Kapas Baby before, needless to say its one of my favorite brands. With the recent launch of their A/W collection, I just knew it was the perfect time to introduce the force behind Kapas Baby. Herewith an interview with Kerryn Greene #forlittlepeople
When did you start Kapas Baby , and why?
I launched Kapas Baby in April 2014 after a desired to start my own e-commerce business and leave the corporate world. I specifically wanted to get into online as I knew there was only potential for growth in SA and the start up costs were at minimum.
Describe Kapas Baby in five words.
Locally made cotton baby clothing.
What challenges have you faced whilst running your company thus far?
There are always many highs and lows when starting a business and putting everything you have got into making it a success. I have faced a few challenges along that way, but nothing too big that couldn’t be dealt with and sorted out. I think the most prominent challenge is keeping up with growth and the cash flow required to fund the growth.
How do you overcome these challenges?
I think it’s really important to have a positive attitude when starting a business, I deal with each challenge as positively as possible and do what is best to solve the problem and move forward.
What do you love about owning your own business?
I am incredibly passionate about my business and love what I do, it is not just hard work but also work that I love. Owning your own business comes with many pro’s and con’s but I do believe that the pro’s outweigh the con’s if your business is growing consistently.
Which job title best describes you?
The Business Owner of Kapas, an locally made baby clothing brand.
How many days per week do you work on average?
I work 5 days a week, I really enjoy my weekends, but having your own business means that you are never really not working and you always need to have your finger on the pulse and know what is going on.
Name three things that you can’t go a day without and that help you run your business.
Number 1 – My iPhone, which is my on-the-go, always online connection to my business no matter where I am.
Number 2 – My MacBook Air, which has everything business related on it and plays a vitally important role in my daily business activities.
I don’t actually have a number 3, the 2 above are by far the most important things!
What advice do you have for someone who wants to start their own business or brand?
It’s not easy, it doesn’t happen over night, there are always highs and lows and don’t expect a salary for a looooong time but if you are dedicated, passionate and your heart is set on starting your own business, then you must follow your instincts and do it as best you can!
Do you feel like you are living your passion?
Yes, every day!
Is there anything you know now, that you wish you knew when you started your business?
There is so much I have learnt over the past 4 years, but there is nothing I can think of in particular that I wish I knew when I started.
Which people have been enormously helpful to you?
My family, who have been there for endless brainstorms sessions. My mom, who plays a major role in the planning and designing of my new collections. My husband, who is always there to discuss business strategies and plans for growth.
Who is your target market? If I were to give you a referral, who would I be looking for?
My target market is moms, moms-to-be, friends and family of moms, and anyone who has a special little one in their life. Woman always spoil the little ones and we’re not going to stop having babies – so I think I’m in the right business.
Any future plans with the brand?
My future plans are to consistently grow the business year on year, I have really enjoyed having a retail space which I am planning to expand in the near future. I want to continue launching new baby clothing collections which are unique, cotton, locally made and on trend.
